Imminent Doom

A few notes as I prepare for the next session:

I’m not sure how else to say this, but y’all better start making better decisions or there will be a TPK in your future, probably sooner rather than later. I truly love that Urs and Desmond are clueless and are being played the way that they are: lovable and dumb. However, I’m going to challenge the rest of the party to start thinking, planning, and managing their compatriots a little better, because some characters are currently making important decisions for the party that they probably shouldn’t be making. I’m not talking about getting jailed by Drow, that happens sometimes. But sailing into a dark cliff and making zero effort to stealth/protect/be aware of surroundings as you climb a 250 rock face called Insanity? Let’s just say I kept a lot of the things you should have encountered given that decision in the bag of tricks to avoid mass carnage.

An Entry in Kaicho’s Private Journal

I’m not exactly sure what we’ve stepped in, or perhaps more accurately, whose boot we are currently on the underside of, but everything is starting to feel squishy and smell foul. This trip felt doomed from the start. I suppose shipwrecks tend to cast a pallor on the beginnings of most journeys. Still, Alexi and I have done good business together in the past. It was a bit perturbing to suddenly find myself on the side of “owing favors.” Especially to the good ol’ guvn’r — a man who puts the Dick in Richard. We may be the pisspots, but that guy is a real shit show. Thought we had killed him, but lately death has started to seem more like a relative term. I’ll be a dwarf’s hairy navel if that fucker did not just snarl his ugly drawl in my direction last night. Seems he has decided to cozy up to my other least favorite humanoid, Devin the Pleasant. “Here let me help you. Everything is fine. Pay no attention to the creepy robed guy behind the curtain. Oh, those new tramp stamps? That’s just my way of showing love and affection —  and keeping you corralled as my little pets. Nothing says ‘I love you’ like bodily defilement!”

DM Corner — Session 27

This was a tough session to run, because for the first time I could palpably tell that some party members were not enjoying the game. However, it was also for me one of the most enjoyable sessions to run, and indicative of the type of game I strive to create. In some ways, my style of DMing reflects my own personal spiritual beliefs. Here’s how: I believe in a God that grants us freewill to make any choices we choose, but regardless of the wisdom or morality of those decisions, God will use those choices for a greater good. That greater good may be a long time in coming, and it also doesn’t preclude us from suffering the negative consequences of our decisions. Oftentimes those decisions also affect a lot more than ourselves. This is obviously a much larger discussion, and no one plays D&D to discuss theology. I say this merely to give context to my DM philosophy. Continue reading “DM Corner — Session 27”
