Braxis returned to the group unscathed. “I met a friend who said we should enter the cove after sundown. He graciously offered to give us all a glorious and swift end. I think that’s our best option.” The others were not convinced.
The Pisspots struggled over what to do next. Jumping into the cove while it was filled with undead and cultists was certainly suicide. They considered burning down the ship at the head of the armada so that the wreckage would block the passage of the other vessels, but they couldn’t find a safe angle of attack that didn’t leave them vulnerable. As dusk drew near, the undead in the cove boarded their ships, and soon they sailed out of the harbor.
With the cove now apparently empty, they descended and prepared to confront the darkness and what remained within. Kaicho, with blindsight gifted by his daggers, boldly stepped into the unknown. In an instant, he was gripped with paralysis and blasted backward into the water where skeletal hands reached up from the bottom of the bay. He was pulled to safety by Rune just as the entity revealed itself.
An undead beholder, called a death tyrant, emerged from the darkness and began blasting all with death rays, beams of fear, slowing, and sleep. Invisible cultists revealed themselves one by one to counterspell the heroes’ magic, and spectral tentacles lashed at them from all sides. Healing was nullified by the beholder’s all-seeing eye, and Mav and Remi were hit with beams of petrification and slowly turned into stone.
Rune too was hit with the petrification beam, but in one clutch moment, as his remaining allies were incapacitated with fear, he shook off the effects. In a last desperate act, he slashed at the final cultist with his armblade, broke its concentration, and freed his friends from the grip of fear. Kaicho flung a dagger into the beholder’s vacant eye socket, and it howled one last time in pain before crumbling to dust. Somehow, despite all odds, the Pisspots had felled the death tyrant.
With two friends turned to stone and several ships full of cultists and zombies sailing away to unknown destinations, they regrouped to figure out what to do next.
Countdown to the end of the world: a few hours? or crisis averted??
