Session 26 — Tales from the Bard: The Short Sonnet

Come one, come all and hear a tale
Of heroes of greatness who fought without fail.
They traveled the land and traveled the sea
Their battles were many
The people, set free.

But fate, at times, will not oblige
And turn you on your head
And on this day the warlock found
His dearest friend was dead.

“I always hoped I’d have some more,
Another year or two,
A month, a week, a day before
Our days were done and through.

“But life is blind and deaf and dumb
To simple hopes and dreams
And just before the moment’s come
The moment’s passed, it seems.

“The hag is all I see at night
And all I hear are screams.
She speaks in wounds and words of fright
And haunts me in my dreams.

“But I know the ending of this tale
And I tell you this my friend:
That some day we will meet again
And every monster ends.”

The archer nodded in support
With fire in his eyes
But zombie hordes still roamed the earth
And they would need supplies!

They called upon their allies dear,
Who whisked them to the cliffs.
Some hit the tavern for a beer
While others purchased gifts.

The sellers showed them many things,
“Test out a sword or two!
Perhaps this set of wizard rings?
They match your back tattoos.”

Freshly stocked and feeling brave
They hit the open road.
They traveled swift and fast and far
And never stopped or slowed.

They spent the night above the ground,
Their fear kept them awake:
Would they find a ruined town?
(The Bard, of course, slept great.)

And just when they had nodded off
In beds of leaves and bark
A group of kids did cross their path
And ran into the dark.

Now what a sight, the group did ask
Of children on the run
In darkest night, on darkest path
These children sure were dumb.

Despite their smarts, they followed fast
They’d always help who’d need it,
They’d fought great evil many times
And sometimes they succeeded!
